Who Holds the Story? Custody, Risk, and Care in Community Archives

Ana Roeschley, Associate Professor at UNC Chapel Hill's School of Data and Information Sciences and founding co-director of Our Refugee Stories Archive (ORSA) will discuss how and when an archive should act as a community hub rather than a repository. Drawing on ORSA’s decision to withdraw from a formal agreement with a university digital library, Roeschley presents an alternative model in which community archives function as hubs for developing local recordkeeping capacity rather than as repositories that acquire community materials. For ORSA this work includes training refugees to request their immigration records, teaching personal archiving skills, hosting workshops, and curating refugee-led art exhibits. In light of recent removals of archival content under political pressure, Roeschley grounds this approach in post-custodial and liberatory archival thought. She will also offer practical ways for institutional archives and archivists to partner with communities of memory, showing how archival expertise can help communities care for their own histories on their own terms.
