Manuscript Submission Guidelines

The Journal accepts a range of articles related to the research, study, theory, or practice in the archival professions. Specifically,

    • Articles that reflect or report the results of original research or scholarly activity.
    • Literature review essays that illustrate professional trends and issues.
    • Articles that report the results of evolving curatorial, technical, public or research processes and methods.
    • Book reviews of recent publications.
    • Reviews of archival exhibits (physical or virtual) and web sites.

JSNCA does not publish news reports on products, services, or individuals.

All members of the archival community, including students and independent researchers, are welcome to submit articles and reviews. Contributors need not be members of SNCA or live in the state of North Carolina.

All submissions should be made via email attachment in .doc or .docx format.

Please submit original, unpublished manuscripts only. The Journal will not reprint or republish articles submitted and accepted by other publications. If the article was presented at a conference, please supply the name and date of the conference on the cover page.

Submissions should be no longer than 30 pages or 7500 words, including citations.

On the cover page, please provide a title for the article as well as the author(s)'s names, position(s), institutional affiliation(s), and business address(es). No other page of the manuscript should have the author's name on it.

On the second page, please provide a title, a brief abstract of the article, and a brief biographical statement for the author(s). Please do not put author(s)'s names on the second and subsequent pages.

Please number all pages of the manuscript.

All citations should follow the text on a separate page(s) (i.e., endnotes).

All accepted manuscripts citations will conform to Chicago Manual of Style 15th edition. Please consult the Chicago Manual for proper usage of citations, capitalization, punctuation, abbreviations, numbers, and other stylistic concerns.

Digital images, tables and charts are welcome, but please note that the Journal is published in black and white. For best results, please send images at full resolution and as attachments.

Editorial Review
Two or three referees will review manuscripts. All reviews of unsolicited articles are blind.

Copyright is retained by the authors of the articles and reviews or their descendants, as stipulated by United States copyright law. However, the Journal for the Society of North Carolina Archivists retains the right to electronically distribute all published articles and reviews. Authors of accepted submissions will be required to sign an agreement with this stipulation.
