Howard

Dawne Howard is the Head of Technical Services at the Duke University Medical Center Archives. She received a B.A. in American History, a B.A. in Journalism and Mass Communication, and an M.S.L.S. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and an M.A. in Public History from North Carolina State University. Before beginning her position at Duke in January 2007, she received technical services experience by working part-time in the Special Collections Research Center at North Carolina State University and the Manuscripts Department at the University of North Carolina and Chapel Hill.

At Duke, Dawne is responsible for accessioning, processing, and cataloging archival materials related to Duke Medicine. Current projects include implementing the Archivists' Toolkit database for tracking accession and collection information.

Dawne stays active in the archival community through SAA and SNCA, as well as various committees and forums at Duke. She is presently serving as SNCA's secretary, and has served on SNCA's Program Committee and Archives Week Committee in the past.

Recent hobbies include reading, watching football and basketball (despite working at Duke, she is a huge UNC fan), unpacking a new house, and planning a wedding! She is also a huge fan of the television show Lost. She keeps promising that she is going to learn how to knit, but hasn't quite gotten there yet.

Her current reading list includes Bad Twin by Gary Troup (based on the television series Lost), Isaac's Storm by Erik Larson, and Understanding Archives & Manuscripts by James M. O'Toole and Richard J. Cox (really!).
