Cat McDowell, candidate for President

I began my service in the archival profession 15 years ago as a student at Duke University RMBSCL, and following graduation from the Public History program at N.C. State I subsequently worked as a digital and technical services project archivist at the American Dance Festival, Wake Forest University, and Winston-Salem State University. From 2005 to 2010 I served as head of Digital Projects unit for the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and as an adjunct instructor for the Introduction to Archival Science course. Since retiring from full-time work, I have supplied contractual and consulting services for institutions and individuals, and have volunteered with the Duke Basketball Museum since its opening in November 2010.  I joined SNCA in 2001 and for the past five years have been on our executive board, serving successively as Publications Chair, Program Committee Chair/Vice President, and President; following the resignation of the Publications Chair last October I currently fill that position as well. For the past few years it has been my pleasure to devote significant time to significant SNCA projects, including the electronic distribution of J-SNCA through EBSCO, coordinating our first multi-day/multi-state conference, and modernizing our officer organizational structure and governing documents. Although unexpected, given the flexibility of my schedule and previous board experience, I felt I was able to make the commitment of time and energy necessary to lead SNCA for another year since our current vice president is unable to rotate to the presidency next year.

Jennifer Motszko, candidate for Vice President

I am the Manuscripts Archivist at the Martha Blakeney Hodges Special Collections and University Archives at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro where I have worked for the last four years.  Prior to that I worked as an Archives Technician for the Harley-Davidson Corporate Archives.  In 2007, I received a MA in History and an MA in Library and Information Science, with a concentration in Archival Administration, from the University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee.  I have served on the SNCA Board as a Member at Large and as part of the Local Arrangements Committee for the past year, helping assess conference and hotel space, organizing funding, and assisting where needed. I am interested in taking on a more robust role on the Board and in serving SNCA more directly as VP/Program Committee Chair.

Beth Ann Koelsch, candidate for Treasurer

I have been the curator of the Betty H. Carter Women Veterans Historical Project (WVHP) at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro since 2008. Previously, I worked as a project archivist at the Sallie Bingham Center for Women’s History and Culture at Duke University.  I received my Masters in Library Science (MSLS) degree from the School of Information and Library Science at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2007 and my undergraduate degree from Duke University in 1990. Currently, I am serving on the SNCA board both as a member at large and as assistant treasurer.  As treasurer of SNCA, I would also bring additional experience from my 2005-2006 term as treasurer for the UNC- Chapel Hill student chapter of the Society of American Archivists.

Jodi Berkowitz, candidate for Publications Committee Chair

Jodi Berkowitz is currently the Pruitt-Shanks Processing Archivist at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She has served on the Editorial Board of the Journal of the Society of North Carolina Archivists since July 2010, and previously served on the Executive Board of SNCA as a Member at Large. Jodi received her MSLS from the School of Information and Library Science at UNC in 2006.

Rebecca Petersen, candidate for Archives Week Committee Chair

Rebecca Petersen, Access Archivist at Wake Forest University Special Collections and Archives. I received my MLIS from University of North Carolina at Greensboro and a BA in American Studies and minor in art history from the George Washington University. I stepped in as Archives Week chair when the last chair moved out of state and I am eager to continue my work. Archives Week promotes archives across the state and I believe we can get more participation from colleagues and the public by offering even more dynamic programming and encouraging collaboration.

Marcellaus Joiner, candidate for Member-at-Large

I am the Digital Project Archivist for Bennett College for Women. I have earned a B.A. in History from North Carolina A&T State University and a Masters of Library Science from North Carolina Central University. In the previous year I have been a general member of the SNCA organization. More recently I have co-chaired the planning committee for the 2012 conference with Vice President Katie Nash. I would like to serve as a Member at Large for SNCA to acquire greater knowledge of how the organization shapes and molds the field of archives in North Carolina. To serve as a Member at Large would further my professional development through networking and collaboration with peers in the field. What I bring to the table is five years of work experience in the archives field from institutions such as North Carolina State University, the State Library of North Carolina, and Bennett College for Women, my youth, and a desire to see the field further expand and prosper.

Craig Fansler, candidate for Member-at-Large

­­­­My name is Craig Fansler, and I am Preservation Librarian and a member of Special Collections at ZSR Library of Wake Forest University.  I hold an MLIS from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, a Master of Science in Management from Troy University and a Bachelor of Arts in Art History from East Carolina University.  I have additional training with Etherington Conservation, Johns Hopkins University Preservation and binder Don Rash.   As Preservation Librarian, I design the marketing materials for the ZSR Library at Wake Forest University as well as oversee library exhibits.  I teach book repair workshops for the North Carolina Preservation Consortium (NCPC).  I have restored books and built protective enclosures for archival materials for 17 years and served as President of NCPC.  I presented with Rachel Hoff and Audra Eagle Yun at the SNCA Conference in Pinehurst in 2010.  I am currently involved professionally with the Society of American Archivists and would like to be more involved with my fellow archivists and librarians in North Carolina.  I share your love of archives and special collections, preserving these materials and making them accessible to the wider world.

The Society of North Carolina Archivists will hold its annual conference this March at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (Greensboro, N.C.). The conference will take place March 29-30, with pre-conference workshops on March 28. There are a lot of great sessions on the program this year, and we hope you can attend!

The first phase of the overhaul will take place in Fall 2011 and will consist of content migration and site reorganization. Phase two, in Winter 2011/2012, will integrate into the site a more streamlined membership database and conference registration system.
