The Program Committee is now welcoming proposals for the 2018 SNCA conference on the theme “Navigating the Web of Community: Archivists and the Ethics of Care.” The conference will be held at Duke University in Durham, NC, on March 14-16, 2018. Workshops will be held on Wednesday, March 14, with the conference held on Thursday and Friday, March 15-16.
The archives conversation is shifting from thinking about the archivist as a neutral keeper of the records, and is developing more nuanced understandings and strategies to encourage archivists to bring their full selves to work. The unique contexts and personalities of archivists enable us to develop relationships with communities to collect, document, provide outreach, and engage archives in conversations for a wide range of representation.
The Committee invites proposals that are related to, but not limited to, the following:
- How archivists approach work with vulnerable and/or under-documented communities
- How archivists describe and provide access to their collections
- How archivists curate workplace environments, and how this impacts professional diversity
- How archivists determine or influence the role archives will play in communities
A fuller description of the theme and submission guidelines can be found on the Call for Proposals page. Submission deadline is midnight Friday, December 22, 2017.
